Ninh Binh Day Trip From Hanoi: Travel Tips
Ninh Bình was the surprise of our 2023 trip to northern Vietnam. It’s about two hours by bus from Hanoi, and its limestone mountains rise straight out of rice fields and rivers.
We’d just come back from a Hạ Long Bay cruise, and we still think Ninh Bình might have been more beautiful. Here’s our advice for making the most of a day trip from Hanoi, including how to handle a group tour with food allergies.
1. Book a Tour That Combines the Highlights
We booked a small-group day tour with about 12 people.
In one day, we visited Hoa Lư, the ancient capital founded by 10th-century King Đinh Bộ Lĩnh, biked through the countryside, took a rowboat through river caves, and climbed to the top of Mua Cave. Our guide, Ky, was enthusiastic and kept the long day fun.
Our advice: Ninh Bình’s sights are spread out, so a tour that handles transportation lets you see far more in one day. Look for one that includes the boat ride and Mua Cave.
2. Don’t Skip the Boat Ride, Even in the Rain
It was pouring by the time we reached the boats. Our rower handed us umbrellas, and we set off anyway. It was stunning. We floated past towering limestone mountains covered in green and through caves that opened onto even better views.
Our advice: This is the must-do. Rain doesn’t ruin it, but come prepared for it.
3. Bring a Real Rain Jacket
Our guide handed out very cheap ponchos before our bike ride. By the time we reached the boats, mine had completely ripped apart, and I had to buy another from a stand by the dock.
Our advice: Pack a lightweight rain jacket for northern Vietnam, especially for a day spent outdoors. Disposable ponchos won’t last.
4. Ask About Allergy-Friendly Meals When You Book
Our tour included a buffet lunch after the bike ride. The food was very good, but I eat gluten-free, and so did a new friend we made. With no labels, we took our best guesses at what was safe — mostly rice, rice noodles, and meat that didn’t look like it was in sauce.
Our advice: Guessing works for some allergies with delayed effects, like mine, but not all. Share your dietary needs when you book, and ask the tour company to confirm with the restaurant. Kitchens can usually accommodate you if they know in advance. Carry safe snacks in case they can’t.
5. Eat Before an Early Pickup
Our bus picked us up at about 7:40am, before most breakfast spots in Hanoi were open. We ordered hot coffee through Grab and mixed in protein powder we’d brought from home.
Our advice: Pack breakfast or a protein bar the night before. With a long tour day ahead, you don’t want to start on empty.
6. Know What You’re Getting Into at Mua Cave
Our guide said it’s about 500 steps to the top of Mua Cave, where a stone dragon sculpture winds along the ridge. Some steps are like a normal staircase. Others are two or three times as tall. We stopped often to catch our breath, but the views got better every time: rice fields and town on one side, mountains and river on the other.
Reaching the dragon itself meant waiting in line and scrambling over wet, slippery rocks. We decided it wasn’t worth the risk, took a selfie near the dragon’s head, and started down. The first part of the descent was so steep we had to walk sideways.
Our advice: Wear shoes with good grip, bring water, and take your time. In the rain, skip the final rock scramble. The views from the stairs are worth the climb on their own.
7. It’s Okay to Sit It Out
Lauren wasn’t feeling well, so she stayed at the café at the base. She had a great conversation with two other travelers from our boat, and the food and drinks were very good.
Our advice: Don’t push yourself on a climb like this if you’re sick, tired, or have mobility issues. The base is a pleasant place to wait.
8. Ninh Bình or Hạ Long Bay?
Both have dramatic limestone scenery, but they feel different. Hạ Long Bay is a cruise: you see the islands from the water and relax on board. Ninh Bình is a land-and-river adventure, with greener landscapes, biking, and climbing.
Our advice: If you have time, do both. If you have to choose, pick Ninh Bình for an active day trip from Hanoi, and Hạ Long Bay for a relaxing overnight cruise.
